Westcoast International Secondary School (WISS) is the only private secondary school on the west coast of Mauritius using English as medium of instruction. The School was founded in 2014, with the aim of addressing the issue mentioned before, namely the limited choice of English-medium schools in the island. The School commits itself to provide, by use of first-class facilities, a challenging, engaging, and internationally orientated education, which prepares students for the modern and fast changing world.
Westcoast International Secondary School uses the IMYC (International Middle Year Curriculum), a well-balanced international curriculum, for all students of Forms 1 – 3. The following subjects are offered: English / English Literature, French / French Literature, Mathematics, Integrated Science, Business Studies, Social Studies, Computer studies, P.E, Music, Home Economics, optional 3rd language, Design & Technology, and Art & Design. Students of Forms 4 and 5 study a curriculum preparing them to sit for the IGCSE examination (Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education). The course is organized by the University of Cambridge, it lasts for two years and finishes, after successfully passing the exam, with an internationally recognized qualification. The IB examination (International Baccalaureate) is taken by students after finishing Forms 6 and 7, which are the last two years. The IB Program is internationally accepted and enables students, after successfully passing the exam, with the qualification necessary to enter higher education at university level.
At Westcoast International Secondary School, great emphasis is placed on activities beyond the general curriculum. Students are especially encouraged to participate in extra activities and community projects. Personal development is the focus of these activities, and a variety of them are offered, namely: Judo, Catechism, Training (Sports), Self-Defense, and Photography, to name a few.
Facilities, which became available at the new premises in Cascavelle by January 2017, comprise of buildings for Art and Design, Computer Technology, Design and Technology, Science, Home Economics, Library, and Music and Drama.In order to offer a variety of sports, the School expects to have a gymnasium, basketball, volleyball, and handball outdoor courts, as well as a football field.
